What Mercury retrograde actually is
Mercury never actually reverses. Retrograde is a line-of-sight effect: Mercury goes round the Sun in about 88 days against Earth's 365, so roughly every 116 days it laps us on the inside — and for about three weeks around that pass, its position against the fixed stars appears to slide backwards. Astronomers call it apparent retrograde motion. Every planet does it; Mercury just does it most often, because it laps us most often.
Picture the two orbits as lanes on a circular track, Mercury on the inside and moving faster. For most of the lap we watch it from across the track and it tracks forward with everything else. But when it comes round the inside and passes between us and the Sun, it crosses our line of sight the other way about — and against the stars behind it, that reads as backwards. The middle of every Mercury retrograde is that pass, which astronomers call inferior conjunction, and it is also the closest Mercury ever gets to Earth.
Apparent retrograde motion is one of the oldest problems in astronomy. Babylonian scribes tracked it centuries before anyone tried to explain it; Ptolemy systematised the fix in the second century AD with epicycles, small circles the planets were supposed to ride around their main orbits, and that model held for roughly fourteen hundred years. Copernicus's Sun-centred model of 1543 needed no epicycle for retrograde motion at all — put the Sun in the middle and it falls straight out of the geometry. The word is Latin: retrogradus, stepping backward.
Those are not rounded folklore. Every one of them is the minimum, maximum or mean across all 302 Mercury retrogrades between 1940 and 2035, recomputed from the ephemeris on every build.
The two shadow periods
The shadow periods are the part most sites skip, and they are why a retrograde can feel as though it starts early and ends late. Mercury's retrograde arc is a stretch of zodiac it covers three times over: forward, backward, then forward again. The pre-retrograde shadow opens when Mercury first enters that stretch while still moving forward — precisely, when it reaches the degree it will later station direct at. The post-retrograde shadow closes when it finally climbs back past the degree where it first turned. Both boundaries on this page are solved from the same ephemeris as the stations themselves rather than rounded off to "about two weeks".
Pre-retrograde shadow
Mercury is direct, crossing for the first time the stretch of sky it is about to re-cross backwards. Tradition treats this as the setup: whatever is quietly started, signed or half-said now is what the retrograde will hand back to be looked at again.
Do: finish and file what you already started, take the backup, and actually read the thing you are about to sign.
Hold: beginning something you would hate to have to redo — the next few weeks are the redo.
Mercury retrograde
The three weeks the whole internet is talking about. In Western astrological tradition Mercury governs speech, writing, messages, travel and small machines, so its retrograde is read as a stretch for re-doing rather than doing: review, revise, repair, reconnect, reconsider.
Do: revisit, revise, repair, back things up, re-read, and reply to the person you have been meaning to.
Hold: signing without reading, buying the expensive device, and assuming your message landed the way you meant it.
Post-retrograde shadow
Mercury has turned forward and is re-covering the ground it gave up, degree by degree, until it passes the point where it first turned. Tradition reads it as the settling-out: what was decided during the retrograde now gets its real test, and the loose ends close.
Do: act on whatever the review turned up, and let delayed plans re-form at their own pace.
Hold: expecting everything to snap back on the day it stations — the clearing takes about another fortnight.

How people work with it
None of this is a rule of physics — it is what the tradition advises, and most of it is decent practice in any three weeks of the year. That is rather the point: the advice costs you nothing if the astrology is wrong.
The one piece of Mercury retrograde advice that costs nothing and pays whether or not the astrology is real. Take the backup, export the file, photograph the document. Three weeks, three or four times a year, is a perfectly good excuse to do it on a schedule.
Tradition says do not sign during a retrograde. The workable version is: never sign anything you have not read, and if a contract genuinely cannot wait three weeks, read it twice instead of postponing it.
Review, revise, repair, revisit, reconnect, refund, rehearse. Astrologers treat the retrograde as a re- period rather than a dead zone, and pointing three weeks squarely at the backlog is a real use for it.
Mercury rules the message, and the tradition's most repeated caution is the message that lands wrong. Add the sentence you would normally leave out — the one that says what you actually meant by the first.
Travel and appointments are Mercury's own territory. Re-checking a departure time costs nothing, and it is the single most common thing people report going wrong.
If you keep a practice, tradition suggests one thing revisited per retrograde — an unfinished project, an unanswered message, an unread contract — and closing it before Mercury stations direct.
The retrograde is a decent reminder and a poor excuse. Nothing in the sky is doing your admin, and no planet sent that email.
Fact, and tradition
This site separates the two on purpose. Here is which is which.
- fact Mercury appears to move backwards for about three weeks, three or four times a year.
Observable and computable. It is called apparent retrograde motion, every planet does it, and the dates on this page are solved from NASA/JPL ephemeris data rather than copied from anywhere.
- myth Mercury reverses its orbit.
It does not, and never has. Mercury's motion around the Sun is unchanged throughout; only its apparent position, watched from a moving Earth, appears to slide backwards for a few weeks.
- fact Mercury is closest to Earth during retrograde.
True — and it is the same event. The middle of every Mercury retrograde is inferior conjunction, Mercury passing between Earth and the Sun, which is also the closest it ever comes to us. It is nearly impossible to see at the time, being lost in the Sun's glare.
- myth Astrologers and astronomers disagree about the dates.
They agree exactly. A station is a matter of geometry and both read it from the same ephemeris — the dates on this page would be identical in an observatory's almanac. The disagreement is entirely about what, if anything, it means.
- myth Mercury retrograde breaks phones, laptops and Wi-Fi.
There is no known mechanism and no controlled evidence for any of it. A person holding a phone exerts more gravitational pull on it than Mercury does. What the retrograde reliably produces is attention: the window is announced in advance, so a dropped call inside it gets filed away and the identical dropped call in April does not.
- tradition Don't sign contracts or buy electronics during Mercury retrograde.
Astrological advice, not a finding. It descends from Mercury's traditional rulership of speech, writing, commerce and small mechanisms. Taken as a prompt to read the contract and check the warranty it is harmless and occasionally useful; taken as a prohibition it simply moves your decisions around the calendar.
