How to tell if a crystal is safe in water, sun and salt
Three simple physical properties decide almost everything: hardness (the Mohs scale), whether the mineral is porous or water-soluble, and whether its colour comes from a light-sensitive centre. Soft stones below about 5 on the Mohs scale scratch and dissolve; porous ones drink up water, oils and dye; copper, iron and lead minerals corrode or are toxic; and many coloured stones fade in the sun. When in doubt, use a dry method — moonlight, smoke, sound, a selenite plate or dry rice are safe for every stone here.
