Spirit is the fifth element in the scheme this site follows, added above the classical four for the stones that do not belong to the body at all. These are the amplifiers, the cleansers and the crown stones: clear quartz, selenite, apophyllite, moldavite. They add no flavour of their own, which is precisely why they are used to strengthen or clear whatever sits beside them.
Chrysoberyl
Green in daylight and red under lamplight, which is why it became the stone of the two-sided life.
Worth knowing: Genuine alexandrite is rarer than diamond. Nearly everything sold under the name is lab-grown alexandrite or colour-change synthetic corundum.
Phyllosilicate
Glassy clear pyramids that grow on basalt, kept for the sense of a room being aired out.
Phosphate inclusion
Golden needles growing inside amethyst or quartz, sold as a stone of large-scale change.
Worth knowing: Cacoxenite is an inclusion rather than a standalone crystal. What is sold as cacoxenite is host quartz or amethyst with the mineral growing inside it.
Quartz
Doubly terminated quartz from Herkimer County, New York, so clear it was mistaken for diamond.
Worth knowing: A Herkimer diamond is quartz, not diamond. It sits at 7 on the Mohs scale rather than 10.
Glass
Milky and blue-glowing against the light, popular for transitions and for how it looks.
Worth knowing: Opalite is man-made opalescent glass. It is not opal, not moonstone and not a mineral, and honest sellers say so.
Gypsum · Mohs 2
Translucent white gypsum, used to clear rather than to add. It dissolves in water.
Cyclosilicate
Deep magenta-purple, only identified in 1944, and traditionally given to people who absorb the mood of a room.
Quartz · Mohs 7
The blank stone. It holds no agenda of its own, which is why it is used to strengthen whatever sits beside it.
Tektite glass · Mohs 5.5
Green glass formed by a meteorite impact, with a reputation for rearranging lives fast.
Worth knowing: Moldavite is a tektite, glass formed by a meteorite impact about 15 million years ago, and it is one of the most faked stones sold. Green bottle glass is the usual substitute.
The elements are a balancing scheme rather than a ranking. The traditional advice is to pair rather than to stack: an air stone with an earth stone so that clear thinking has somewhere to land, a fire stone with a grounder so that drive does not become agitation. Two intense stones of the same element together are read as too much of one thing. The pairing checker applies that rule to any two or three stones you name.
