The heart is the middle chakra and the hinge of the whole scheme, joining the three lower body centres to the three upper ones. It is associated with love in every direction, including towards yourself, and with grief, forgiveness and the decision to stay open. Its stones split into two families: the greens, which are about growth and loyalty, and the pinks, which are about tenderness.

Chrysoberyl
Green in daylight and red under lamplight, which is why it became the stone of the two-sided life.
Worth knowing: Genuine alexandrite is rarer than diamond. Nearly everything sold under the name is lab-grown alexandrite or colour-change synthetic corundum.
Feldspar · Mohs 6–6.5
Blue-green feldspar traditionally used for saying no without a fight.
Chalcedony · Mohs 7
Dark green flecked with red, an old warrior's stone tied to stamina and steady courage.
Glass
Pink-red and cloudy, used for lifting the mood of a heart that has gone flat.
Worth knowing: Cherry quartz is manufactured glass, not a natural quartz variety. It is still popular, but it is not a mineral.
Beryl · Mohs 7.5–8
Green beryl, the stone of loyalty and the long view of love rather than the first spark.
Fluorite · Mohs 4
Banded purple, green and blue. The desk stone, associated with order and clear thinking.
Jadeite / Nephrite
Carved for four thousand years in China and in Mesoamerica as the stone of a well-lived life.
Worth knowing: Jade is two different minerals: jadeite and nephrite. Both are genuine jade. Serpentine, aventurine and dyed quartz are frequently sold as jade and are not.
Spodumene
Pale pink spodumene with a strong lengthwise sheen, tied to opening a guarded heart.
Worth knowing: Kunzite fades in sunlight and cleaves easily along one plane, so a knock in the wrong direction can split it.
Mica · Mohs 2.5–3
Lilac mica that genuinely contains lithium, and traditionally the anxiety stone.
Quartz (chalcedony)
Clear chalcedony with green mineral growth inside that looks like moss. The gardener's stone.
Worth knowing: The green is not plant matter. It is chlorite or hornblende that grew in dendritic, plant-like shapes.
Quartz · Mohs 7
Soft pink and everywhere, because it is the stone of gentleness towards other people and towards yourself.
Copper silicate · Mohs 2.5–3.5
Blue-green copper silicate, the stone for a softer voice in a hard conversation.
Chalcedony · Mohs 7
Apple-green chalcedony, the hope stone, associated with a heart that starts working again.
Quartz · Mohs 7
Green quartz flecked with mica, carried for luck of the ordinary, unspectacular kind.
Copper carbonate · Mohs 3.5–4
Banded green copper carbonate, tied to transformation. Toxic, and best kept polished and dry.
Worth knowing: Malachite is a copper carbonate. Its dust is toxic and any water it has soaked in is unsafe to drink.
Tektite glass · Mohs 5.5
Green glass formed by a meteorite impact, with a reputation for rearranging lives fast.
Worth knowing: Moldavite is a tektite, glass formed by a meteorite impact about 15 million years ago, and it is one of the most faked stones sold. Green bottle glass is the usual substitute.
Carbonate · Mohs 3.5–4
Pink banded manganese carbonate, associated with tenderness towards your younger self.
Silicate · Mohs 5.5–6.5
Pink shot through with black manganese, tied to forgiveness of the slow, practical sort.
The traditional practice is simple and physical: one stone, placed at the centre of the chest or held in the hand, for as long as it takes to notice your breathing change. Tradition treats more stones as less effect rather than more, and the usual advice is to finish at a lower centre than you started so you do not get up light-headed.
