The stones traditionally chosen for communication, what each one is used for, and how to look after it.
The communication stones are almost entirely blue and almost entirely throat-chakra, and the tradition is specific about which problem each one addresses. Aquamarine is for saying the hard thing without raising your voice, amazonite for saying no without a fight, chrysocolla for softening a conversation that has already gone badly, and blue lace agate for anyone who talks fast when nervous.
⚠️ Chrysocolla is a toxic mineral. Keep it dry and polished, wash your hands after handling raw pieces, and never make a gem elixir from it. Full care verdicts →
Feldspar · Mohs 6–6.5
Blue-green feldspar traditionally used for saying no without a fight.
Apatite · Mohs 5
Blue-green and tied to motivation with a plan behind it rather than a burst of enthusiasm.
Beryl · Mohs 7.5–8
Sea-blue beryl linked with saying the difficult thing calmly.
Quartz (chalcedony)
Pale blue banded agate, the gentlest of the throat stones and a common gift for anxious talkers.
Volcanic glass
Translucent blue glass used for speaking plainly when the stakes are high.
Worth knowing: Natural blue obsidian is extremely rare. Almost all bright blue obsidian on the market is manufactured glass.
Sulfate · Mohs 3–3.5
Pale sky-blue crystals, tied to a very quiet kind of stillness.
Pectolite · Mohs 4.5–5
Caribbean blue pectolite, found only in the Dominican Republic, tied to the sense that it will pass.
Glass
Milky and blue-glowing against the light, popular for transitions and for how it looks.
Worth knowing: Opalite is man-made opalescent glass. It is not opal, not moonstone and not a mineral, and honest sellers say so.
Anhydrite · Mohs 3–3.5
Chalky blue anhydrite, associated with comfort and a sense of company.
Copper silicate · Mohs 2.5–3.5
Blue-green copper silicate, the stone for a softer voice in a hard conversation.
Kyanite · Mohs 4.5–7
Blue blades, traditionally used to straighten the line between what you think and what you say.
Rock (lazurite) · Mohs 5–5.5
Ultramarine flecked with pyrite, an ancient stone of wisdom and plain speech.
Sodalite · Mohs 5.5–6
Deep blue veined with white, the stone of cool logic and honest self-assessment.
Turquoise · Mohs 5–6
Sky blue to green, carried for thousands of years as a travelling and protection stone.
Tradition is more specific about method than most articles let on. Grounding and protection stones are held or placed rather than worn. Sleep stones go on the nightstand, not under the pillow where they get lost. Throat stones are worn at the neck. Money stones go where the money is handled. Pick one rather than a handful: the consistent instruction across the literature is that a single stone with a stated intention beats a pocketful without one.
If you would rather describe the feeling than pick from a list, the crystal finder starts from what you need and works backwards to the stone.
The mineral family, the Mohs hardness and the water verdict on each card are checkable physical fact, drawn from standard mineralogical and gemmological references. The chakra, element and purpose associations are tradition, published across the modern crystal-healing literature and offered here for reflection rather than as fact.
