The stones traditionally chosen for courage, what each one is used for, and how to look after it.
Courage stones are the reds, and the tradition behind them is one of the oldest in the record: iron-bearing red minerals carried by soldiers, travellers and anybody about to do something physically frightening. Bloodstone was the Roman soldier's stone. These are read as stones of stamina and appetite rather than of calm, so they pair badly with the sleep group and well with a grounding stone.
Chalcedony · Mohs 7
Dark green flecked with red, an old warrior's stone tied to stamina and steady courage.
Chalcedony · Mohs 7
Burnt orange and associated with starting things. The stone of the person who keeps almost beginning.
Garnet · Mohs 6.5–7.5
Deep red and tied to appetite: passion, commitment and the energy to chase something.
Iron oxide · Mohs 5–6
Metallic grey and heavy in the hand, the most literal grounding stone on the shelf.
Quartz · Mohs 7
Golden banded quartz with a moving stripe of light, tied to nerve that keeps its eyes open.
Tradition is more specific about method than most articles let on. Grounding and protection stones are held or placed rather than worn. Sleep stones go on the nightstand, not under the pillow where they get lost. Throat stones are worn at the neck. Money stones go where the money is handled. Pick one rather than a handful: the consistent instruction across the literature is that a single stone with a stated intention beats a pocketful without one.
If you would rather describe the feeling than pick from a list, the crystal finder starts from what you need and works backwards to the stone.
The mineral family, the Mohs hardness and the water verdict on each card are checkable physical fact, drawn from standard mineralogical and gemmological references. The chakra, element and purpose associations are tradition, published across the modern crystal-healing literature and offered here for reflection rather than as fact.
